Blondes going Green! - August 14, 2013

Have you ever heard the saying, “Blondes have more fun?” Well for some blondes, it’s no fun at all, especially when you get out of a swimming pool and your hair is green! Yikes!

So here is the bigger question, what causes blonde hair to turn green when swimming in a pool? The most common answer from swimmers is chlorine, but really it isn’t the chlorine but something else that causes this reaction.

The culprit is… Copper! Now you are asking how is that possible, right? Simple chemistry helps explains this phenomom, the copper in the water will become oxidized by the chlorine which then binds its self to the protein in the hair. The green color comes from the oxidized copper.

Now the next question is, how does copper get into the swimming pool? Well there are a few ways such as well water, copper-based algaecides and erosion of pool equipment like heaters.

And the final question, how do you prevent having an issue with copper? This is a wonderful question! There are two things to be aware of, water chemistry and algaecides.

Water chemistry plays a key role in the swimming pool environment. This means, testing the swimming pool at least a few times during the seasons. Depending on your water source, wells may contain dissolved metals such as copper. Another way for copper to leach its way into the swimming pool water is through improper water chemistry and having a heater. The heating element inside the heater is made up of copper. In the process of having poor pH and alkalinity levels, the water will become acidic and will slowing pull copper out of the heat exchanger. In both of these cases, we recommend using a procedure to remove these metals with a sequestering agent and a filter aid.

Algaecide is a wonderful product to be using on a weekly preventative against algae. When purchasing algaecide, select one that is a polyquat which means the copper molecule has a special coating around it so it cannot oxidize or cause staining issues.

If you have further questions about water chemistry and copper, please do not hesitate to contact one of our stores! To find our stores, please visit our Location and Hours page.
